(1)
A comprehensive pack of resources - non-chronological report writing- Spring These resources include : 1) Presentation A that introduces the general features of report writing in a colourful, child friendly format that clearly leads the learners through the signposts of the genre. 2) Presentation B that presents non-chronological report writing in clear and concise steps. It provides factual sentences and paragraphing under clear sub-headings. It is intended to provide an organised pro forma for writers and could be used over a few sessions before independent writing. 3) Presentation C that reminds learners of the importance of revising writing with an online link that illustrates redrafting. I have also provided differentiated checklists - peer and self editing for assessment. The model report on 'Spring' allows learners to read, discuss, analyse, highlight and 'pull apart' - active learning. A mind map for the planning stage to support learners ( can be easily edited to provide more support). This detailed pack of resources will support learners thoroughly from the initial lesson on the structure of a report through the analysis of models, building up vital words and phrases within a mind map format and finally to a finished piece that can be assessed /celebrated. Extension Tasks include adding in : a glossary a True or False statement a 'Do you know?' question I have uploaded several jpg files so teachers can peruse the resources more comprehensively. I would be delighted if you would provide feedback. Many thanks for free use clip art provided by http://www.clipartlord.com

Maths Count On / Count Back Oral Activities / Add, Subtract, Multiply and Divide Whiteboard Tasks

(1)
There are 6 PowerPoint presentations which provide active maths tasks. All 6 are ideal starters or plenaries and provide reinforcement and consolidation in an active and engaging manner. Both of the 'Counting On' and 'Counting Back' presentations encourage and support carousel oral counting within a maths group or class. They ensure that children practise oral counting on and back from different start numbers. Both presentations can be edited easily with different starting numbers, Both of the 'Tens and Units Adding and Subtracting' presentations provide quick fire whiteboard activities with answers so that children can immediately correct. Both of the 'Hundreds,Tens and Units Multiplying and Dividing' presentations provide quick fire whiteboard activities with answers so that children can immediately correct. All of the activities present an active approach to learning number facts. These rehearsal activities are designed for use with children to help them to memorise essential number facts and practise their number skills. I have found these activities invaluable as they allow incidental assessment and can be delivered to groups /a class with ease. The children are engaged and motivated and enjoy them as starters and plenaries. I have uploaded several jpg files so teachers can peruse the resources more comprehensively. I hope that your children enjoy these active tasks. I would be delighted if feedback was provided. Many thanks for free use clip art provided by http://www.clipartlord.com/

Handling Data- Introducing Block Graphs, Pictograms and Tally Marks

(0)
There are 4 presentations in total and each of them provides a simple introduction to data handling for young learners. They present information in: block graph form tally chart form pictogram form They are ideal lesson starters as they are clear and concise. They encourage the learners to actively record answers on mini whiteboards. Answers to each slide question follows on to provide immediate correction as the learners show their whiteboard answers. This ensures whole class/group engagement in the task as well as providing immediate teacher assessment. It is easier to see who is managing the task well and those who are struggling to interpret the charts etc. The emphasis is on interpreting simple data. There is added challenge when children are asked to analyse and identify the most popular or least popular item as well as comparing two different items. These presentations offer the children some raw data that they have not had to collect themselves. This can be useful: the teacher knows that everyone has the same information without worrying about the accuracy of recording methods. So, the children can focus on analysis rather than collection at this stage. I have found this approach an ideal introduction and children are more confident when they are asked to interpret data more independently. I have uploaded several jpg files so teachers can peruse the resources more comprehensively. I hope that your children enjoy these active tasks. I would be delighted if feedback was provided.

Poetry and Early Grammar - A Fun Combination!

(0)
This presentation contains a complete poetry lesson based on days of the week . A tutorial in PowerPoint that provides several examples of poetic composition with a grammar focus on Proper Nouns and Adjectives. It can be amended and extended easily to include adverbs and similes for older learners as well as adapted for months of the year. It can be also themed if required e.g. seasonal sentences. The clear structure provides a writing frame for more hesitant writers and can be easily extended for more secure learners. 'Active Task' opportunities are given throughout the lesson to engage children with the grammar points and composition of each line. I have provided clear learning intentions and the success criteria for display and reference. In addition, I have provided an editing sheet so the teacher can clearly outline what is needed to be successful as well as a smaller version for the children to use . There is also pictorial prompt bank provided to support less secure learners. I have found placing grammar within a poetry context helps reinforce teaching and learning. I have uploaded several slide shots so teachers can view the resources more fully. Totally versatile - enjoy with your young writers! I would be delighted if you would provide feedback. Winter Sentences : Trace, Write, Order Tasks

(0)
This presentation helps children to structure simple sentences about winter. The initial slides ask the children to read a simple sentence with pictorial prompt. Then they trace over the sentence and write the sentence within handwriting lines. Lastly, they cut out each word, order them and glue them on the sentence strip. Ideal for early writers. Further tasks ask the children to look at 3 winter pictorial prompts. They then ‘turn and talk’ to a writing partner to aid sentence composition. The children ‘have a go’ and write 3 simple sentences to match each picture. Each slide can be displayed on a smart board for a ‘talk for writing’ session. Children can also compose on whiteboards before recording on task sheet. Finally, some slides ask more confident writers to compose 2 sentences independently using connectives, An additional colouring task is provided with a writing opportunity.

Christmas around the World - Non -Chronological Report Writing

(1)
These resources provide a step by step guide to non-chronological report writing themed on ‘Christmas around the World’. The children can research the Christmas traditions independently or as a homework task. Alternatively, the teacher can facilitate a ‘talk for writing’ session to build up facts before the mind map task. The resources include 2 main presentations. ‘Christmas around the World’ presentation deals with 4 countries (United Kingdom, Germany, Australia and Poland) It includes: flashcards for the ‘signposts’ of a report mind map pro forma points for discussion Children should complete the mind map of at least 2 countries first. Then they compose a ‘lively’ title and write two paragraphs initially. Simple editing can take place if required. ‘Report Writing Part 2’ deals with the continuation of the report. It includes: learning intention and success criteria a brief recap on what has gone before a ‘quick dash’ on the structure of the report - sub-headings, paragraphs etc. a close look at continuing the mind map for the remaining countries opportunities to use whiteboards to compose factual sentences as a ‘warm up’ before independent writing ‘turn and talk’ to share writing with peers a writer’s checklist a challenge for ‘fast finishers’ - glossary task These writing tasks can be used for a variety of age groups and can be differentiated according to outcome and the amount of scaffolding provided, Children can write a simple report or a more extended piece of writing which can be developed over several writing sessions. I have included several jpeg files with slide shots to enable teachers to preview the resources more fully. I have also provided a ‘printer friendly’ version of the first PowerPoint to save costs if any of the slides need printed. My children have experienced a great deal of success in report writing when using this step by step approach. The tasks provide breadth, challenge and active tasks are embedded to reinforce and consolidate report writing. The specific countries can be changed easily if needed. It would also be easy to change the focus to : New Year traditions Easter Traditions Other countries of your choice Many thanks for free use clip art provided by http://www.clipartlord.com/

Super Sentences and Perfect Punctuation - Step by Step

(1)
Presentation 1 - Super Sentences, Questions and Exciting Sentences Using full stops, question marks and exclamation marks in simple sentences for young learners. The initial presentation allows reading, writing and basic punctuation to be taught in parallel. It promotes and provides opportunities for the teaching of handwriting, spelling and punctuation as component skills of text composition. The simple , colourful and concise way the text is presented to the learners engages them from the onset. The teacher can simply 'share' the sentence composition as it naturally happens. Additionally, learners can 'share the pen' with the teacher by writing words on the large smart board. A simple but effective way to direct teach, revise and reinforce sentence construction, punctuation and formation of letters. This unit of work can easily be delivered together as revision or taught as single units discreetly: a) composing super sentences with capitals and full stops b) composing super questions with capitals and question marks c) composing exciting sentences with capitals and exclamation marks Presentations 2, 3 and 4 'hand the task over' to the learners after the initial teaching is complete. Each presentation is comprehensive and asks the children to compose sentences or questions with pictorial clues. The learners can compose on mini whiteboards, on paper, on the sheets provided or as a 'cut and stick' activity. Each presentation offers 10 slides with 4 pictorial prompts on each slide. There are 40 sentence tasks for each presentation - 120 in all. The writing process is complex but these resources will encourage your learners’ early attempts at writing.
